Is Oral Health Linked To Heart Disease?

Studies have shown that bacteria in the mouth that are involved in the development of periodontal disease can move into the bloodstream and attach themselves to any damaged area and cause inflammation. This inflammation of the blood vessels can result in illnesses such as an infection of the inner lining of the heart and other cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and even stroke.

Paying attention to your dental hygiene and health — especially your gums — may pay you back with more than a gleaming, healthy smile and manageable dental bills. It may keep your heart healthy too.

Regular healthy habits can lower your risk of both gum disease and heart disease, and if you already have one or both of these conditions, these strategies can help reduce their impact:

– Keep a strict daily brushing routine (for natural teeth or false teeth / dentures).
– Use dental floss to clean in between your teeth.
– Avoid smoking.
– Pay special attention to oral hygiene if you’re taking medications, as some increase your risk of gum disease.
– Have regular dental check-ups, especially if you are pregnant or have diabetes as these conditions increase your risk of gum disease.

As listed here above, simple things such as brushing your teeth regularly and visiting you dentist for checkups are the best way to protect you against the development of gum disease. Take care of your heart by taking care of your oral hygiene and share this article with someone you love so they can learn more and prevent themselves from severe illnesses too.
