Root Canal

Sometimes you have to get to the root of the problem.

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to treat infection or damage within the pulp of a tooth. The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth, containing nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, cracks, or trauma, a root canal is often necessary to save the tooth and prevent further complications.

Why Do You Need a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal may be necessary if you experience symptoms such as severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in the surrounding gums, or a recurring pimple on the gums. These signs often indicate that the pulp has become inflamed or infected due to decay, trauma, or cracks. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to more serious complications, including the formation of abscesses or even tooth loss. By undergoing a root canal, you can alleviate pain and discomfort while preserving your natural tooth, ultimately preventing further dental issues and maintaining your overall oral health.

What Should You Expect?

During a root canal procedure, your dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. After carefully removing the nerve and pulp, the canal will be cleaned and filled with a rubber-like compound and sealing paste. The tooth is then sealed with a filling, and if needed, preparations for a crown can be made. Once a tooth has erupted through the gums, its nerve is no longer essential for its health and function; its only role is sensory, such as detecting hot and cold. Therefore, the absence of the nerve won’t impact the tooth’s everyday function, making this procedure an effective way to preserve your natural tooth.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your root canal treatment, it’s normal to experience some tenderness in the treated area. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Here are some tips for a smooth recovery:

    • Avoid chewing on the treated side until it is fully healed.
    • Follow any specific care instructions given by your dentist.
    • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.
    • Schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and restoration.
