Several studies have emphasised that Oral Care is often missed and not prioritised in Care Homes & Home Care situations and there has been a link to lack of training in this area. Many nurses and carers are developing best practices themselves or learning from their peers without any formal, certified or recognised training.
Mouth Care should focus on oral hygiene, alleviation of symptoms and ensuring that the person is adequately cared for and hydrated. This is to ensure that comfort is provided to reduce pain or discomfort and improve quality of life.
Correct daily Oral Care routines can actually reduce the risk of life threatening illnesses and disease. For example, plaque bacteria has been shown to cause aspiration pneumonia which is life threatening so daily mouth care has a direct positive impact.
While peer learning certainly has its place, there is a need for formalised training. That is why we developed the first of its kind Oral Care Training for Older Adults. Our course aims to support and assist carers, nurses and family members to learn the best practice for mouth care for our most vulnerable in society. It is time to re-build the spirit of our residents in long term care and those needing assistance with self-care.
