Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

Good oral health improves your life. It helps you eat, chew, and speak.

Dental Maintenance begins with the brushing of your teeth, not only is it the most basic process for your oral health but ensures you have less problems in the long run. Flossing is the second most important step that you can do daily. Before brushing, it is important to go over all spaces between your teeth when you floss.  A systematic routine will help you to get a better technique.

Certify that you have a daily routine where you check your mouth and teeth appearance. Keep track of changes in your mouth, in case of need go to our dentist so it can be examined.

Eat a balanced diet. However, eating less foods that may contain sugars and starches (for instance, cakes, soft drinks) will help prevent the decay process. Sugar and Starches will produce acids that will trigger decay of your teeth and mouth. If you eat sugary food, make sure you brush afterwards.

It’s vital to stop smoking as it affects your oral and medical health. Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of oral cancer, tooth discoloration, bad breath, and gum disease.

Making sure to have a dental hygiene routine at home will help you massively when you go to the dentist for your check-ups. Not only helps your oral health but prevents to reduce chances of health problems.

Here are some FAQs

  • What toothbrush should I buy?

Choose a toothbrush that can easily reach to the back of your teeth, a toothbrush head normally should be a half-inch wide and one-inch long so it is easier to move around tight spaces of your mouth.  When it comes to bristles, use a medium strength bristled brush, not too soft that it doesn’t clean your teeth and not too rough that it causes damage to your gums.

Medium Bristles should be the safest and comfortable choice for you.  Electric toothbrushes are great because they can clean more thoroughly the tooth surfaces.

  • Which ingredient is important to have in my toothpaste?

The most important ingredient is fluoride so make sure it has fluoride in the toothpaste of your choice. Fluoride acts on the enamel of your teeth which it makes stronger and more resilient to acid wear out. Calcium carbonates also have a great impact on your oral health, as it is an abrasive agent that helps eliminate plaque, exterior stains, and debris. Helping your teeth feel so smooth and clean after brushing and even make your teeth whiter.

  • What Oral floss should I get?

Oral floss without wax cleans more particles and plaque.  When it comes to size for your dental floss it will depend on how thick or thin the size of the gaps between your teeth. Satin Tape or something similar is great if you can maneuver the string but if you find it difficult then use a dental floss that comes with a handle for ease of use.  Make sure to choose what is more comfortable for you.

  • How to floss?

Flossing needs a consistent pattern to clean your teeth. Begin to floss from the top of your mouth at the back and move forward and around your mouth until you have flossed in between all your top teeth then moving your way to the bottom and repeat the process. Like this you’re less prone to skip any teeth. While flossing move the floss UP and DOWN from GUM to TIP of tooth and not back and forward as that can damage the enamel.  Make sure you don’t use too much pressure as it can harm your gums. Be gentle while flossing especially for the first time since your gums might be sensitive and could bleed a bit. If starts to bleed don’t worry and keep flossing daily and your gums will become healthier.

  • What Mouthwash should I choose?

There are many types of mouthwash available and its best to consider your needs and how the mouthwash can help you.  Here are some examples:

  • Bad breath, to tackle this issue you can get a cosmetic mouthwash which just concentrates on controlling the smell of your breath. This mouthwash does not kill the bacteria causing the problem. This is only good for occasions that you might need a fast fix on your breath. For a continuous use which kills the bacteria, you should match your mouthwash with antibacterial agents and your toothpaste.
  • Dry Mouth: Dry mouth can cause issues with eating, swallowing and general oral health because the larger food debris doesn’t wash away with saliva. It also can cause bad breath so using a mouthwash that controls dry mouth, such as BIO XTRA products, will help considerably.
  • Plaque build-up, Gum recession, gingivitis – some prescribed mouthwash can help reduce oral health issues such as these which cause more difficult Oral health issues so talk to us about this and we can advise on the best options for you.

The ingredients that you might need to look out for a mouthwash are the following:

  • Cetylpyridinium chloride which destroys the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • Carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide helps to whitening your teeth.
  • Alcohol helps to kill bacteria and dissolve the active ingredients in the product.
  • Essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and thyme also helps to refresh the breath. They also have antibacterial and antifungal properties.
You can choose an anti-bacterial or alcohol-based mouthwash, it’s up to you and your needs.
